1926 : Born in Lisbon.
1940-50: He had an intense artistic and civic action and is consensually considered the most outstanding of the national neorealists.
1942 : Held the first exhibition in the studio where he worked. At that time he was invited by Almada Negreiros to participate in the VII Exhibition of Modern Art of the National Propaganda Secretariat/National Information Secretariat (SPN-SNI).
1942-44: Attended the Lisbon School of Fine Arts.
1944: He joined the Porto School of Fine Arts and started several collaborations with newspapers such as “A Tarde”, “Seara Nova”, “Vértice”, “Mundo Literário” and “Horizonte”. Still in this year, he participated in the artistic movement "Os Concidos da Morte".
1945: Production of works that reflected his political activism, such as “O Gadanheiro” exhibited at the National Society of Fine Arts, as well as in his texts published in newspapers.
1946: 1st Spring Exhibition of the Ateneu Comercial do Porto.
1947 : Responsible for organizing the 1st individual exhibition of drawings, in Porto. That same year the mural he had created for Cinema Batalha was ruined by the PIDE. Subsequently, he leaves Porto and returns to the city of Lisbon. He is detained for four months and his painting “Resistance” is confiscated at the II General Exhibition of Plastic Arts of the National Society of Fine Arts.
2nd half of the 50s: Begins to distance himself from political activism and the initial figurative language.
1956 : Created the cooperative “Gravura”, for the creation and dissemination of graphic works with artists such as José Júlio and Rogério Ribeiro. Movement becomes the hallmark of his work, visible in works such as “Pescadores”.
1963 : He lives in Paris. Without ever abandoning the figurative tendency, he frees himself from the neorealist commitment.
1974 : He lived through the revolutionary period and on June 10 he participated in the execution of a panel commemorating the fall of the regime.
1975 : Until now his works have been focused on portraiture, using only saturated color and geometry.
1983 : Presented the series “Os Tigres”, at Galeria 111, in Lisbon.
1984 : Participated in the decoration of the Alto dos Moinhos station, part of the Lisbon subway network.
Current status : Belongs to the 3rd generation of Portuguese modernist painters.
